Women Supporting (Local) Women

For Women’s History Month, we’ve been using our socials to feature some of the amazing women who make and share their work with us here at P+L. We wanted to do a little roundup of some of the local (and local-ish) female talent that we’ve featured this month. Many of these women may not have started their businesses with the intention of being part of the cannabis industry, but since the beginning they have been nothing but supportive of P+L and enthusiastic about sharing their talents with us, which is a bigger deal than they may even know! We love an entrepreneur who chooses to smash through stigma and be their authentic selves in their business practices!

Rose & Ash by Katie Clark

Rose & Ash is a handmade clay accessories shop based right here in Petawawa. She created custom cannabis leaf stud earrings for us that combine her love for cannabis and her talents for clay work.

Rose & Ash came to be in November 2020 when Katie decided she wanted to have a side gig that was just for her.

“Never in a million years did I think that side gig would become what is is now! First and foremost I am a busy mama to my two little girls, Norah and Charlotte. They are my biggest (little??) cheerleaders, supporting me to their little hearts desires. I have been with my husband Brandon for 10 years now. We met in nursing school way back in 2009 and have been together ever since! He is my absolute rock, supporting all that is Rose & Ash, cheering me on the whole way. When I am not busy making earrings, I am a labour and delivery nurse at the local hospital, bringing tiny little lives into the world!”

You probably recognize her business from various pop-ups you have attended in town. She recently launched her first exclusive bridal collection down town Pembroke at Crazy Beautiful Dresses. This is also the second time her jewellery has blessed our shelves! And we are so stoked every time Katie makes a new canna-leaf earring for us!!

Anamizzi is the heart and soul behind Moody Mays.

She launched her handmade jewellery and accessory shop in January 2020 and continues to grow every day!

Over the last year, Anamazzi has begun integrating cannabis into certain jewelry and accessory styles, mixing cannabis with resin and making the most beautiful pieces!

Anamizzi shared with us:

Moody Mays is a shop that really has no limits and that's what I love about it. We keep up with current trends and try our best to offer styles and pieces that are trendy and in-season. When I'm not creating, you will find me with my 7 year old daughter, Olivia. and hanging out with family and friends. I love seeing fellow boss babes follow their dreams. I'm your biggest hype girl!"

Next up, moving a little bit farther away from the Valley, but still close to our hearts, is Octopied Mind and the rad women behind the brand. Jill Davis and Sarah Vezina are two best friends from small town Dalhousie, New Brunswick. They grew up in the same neighbourhood, took the same bus, had the same babysitter and even rode on the same bike. Their inseparability lasted through adulthood where they quit their corporate jobs to work with each other instead. Octopied Mind has been founded on the melting and merging of their brain power, creativity and essence - All of which are used to produce the strange and vulnerable graphic art you see today.

"Octopied Mind" is a play on the words "occupied mind" - a mind that is occupied with chaotic and unhelpful beliefs that prevent you from experiencing how badass you are.

Their hand drawn designs take a lighthearted yet powerful approach to having discussions around mental health and the daily struggles of the average soul. Incorporating mindfulness, spirituality, and rebellion against the status quo to communicate the importance of embracing all that we are, both light & shadow.

"Cannabis was never meant to be a white man's weapon. In fact, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC, goddesses and plants were both considered healers. Up until 1000 BC women practiced healing without restrictions and until more recent history, women were not even allowed to attend medical school and women plant healers were hunted as witches."

"So to all of the marginalized growers, dealers, healers, artists, activists, entrepreneurs, and political leaders (no matter how they identify or what body parts they have) who are working to de-stigmatize and decolonize cannabis - we stand behind you. You have always been and will always be a true ganja goddess."

"Coffee and cannabis at breakfast is a ritual for so many. From soothing feelings to igniting more energy, motivation or creativity within - This combo has helped millions of people improve their quality of life."

Next up, based in Montreal and launched in 2018 by multidisciplinary creative Camille Chacra, Allume is a leading cannabis lifestyle accessories brand for modern times. As a weed enthusiast, she sought to curate and design items that are style-focused and highly functional. "Our intention is to help you elevate your rituals and lean into your chill." Community is also an integral part of Allume's purpose. After all, it's truly the heart and soul of cannabis culture.

To that end, Allume is proud to support equity-oriented organizations like the Floret Coalition and Last Prisoner Project. "We exist in an industry associated with the disproportionate incarceration of BIPOC, and we wholeheartedly dedicate ourselves to giving back and spreading awareness."

We may be a touch obsessed with Allume’s collection of luxury accessories to elevate your smoking practice and simply just make you feel like the fancy lady (or dude) that you truly are while smoking!

We have stocked their belted reversible satin robe from our first day open and at this point, we think half the military bros in the shacks are outfitted with one, which could not make us any happier. One side features a warm green tone perfect for a minimalist look, while the other - a kaleidoscope canna leaf print - makes a statement. Their durable, chic, wooden grinder is perfect for your trickier, sticky herb & you can store your precious doobies in their beautiful, discrete joint holder. We are huge advocates for being true to your unique selves, and Allume embodies this message through-and-through; celebrate your weirdness with their playful ceramic ashtray. A great décor accessory that can also be used as a catch-all dish for your jewelry and keys.

Lastly, during a special collaboration with leading tarot brand, Soul Cards. The luxury Green Dream deck was created, paying homage to Mother Nature's most healing and spiritual plant. Featuring 78 velvety smooth matte cards with a beautiful leaf print, and signature Soul Cards symbols in gold foil.  They radiate good vibes.
