COVID-19 with Nurse Jenna

March 23, 2020

Hi everyone!!

If you’re like me you’ve been “social distancing” aka staying in your house for over a week now. It’s been a WILD week at home, let me tell you. My husband is working from home right now as well, so we decided it would be a good week to try and potty train my now THREE YEAR OLD (we had a pandemic birthday party on Saturday as well). So far we have a zero success rate, so that’s how that's going. I hope your time in isolation is more fun, and if not I hope you are smoking as much weed as you need to at this time!!

So as many of you know, in addition to working at Prairie and Luna, I am also a Registered Nurse. I still work on a surgical ward when I’m not at P+L. I figured I could weigh in on this COVID-19 situation a little bit. The hospital I work at has been working HARD to prepare for the arrival of COVID-19, and by “arrival” I mean confirmed positive cases. It is very possible and very likely that there are cases in the community that have not been tested, given our proximity to Ottawa and southern Ontario. Not everyone who comes to the hospital with a fever and cough gets tested for COVID-19, you will only get tested if you meet certain criteria. The government of Canada has a great self assessment tool that can be used to see if you should be tested. There is also this website that can answer any other questions you may have regarding COVID-19. I don’t want to use this blog to mansplain COVID-19, the government does a better job of that.

So as you probably know, COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that spreads via droplets, some research findings suggest it can have airborne transmission as well. It typically presents as a mild flu (fever, cough, may or may not have a runny nose), but can progress to a very serious pneumonia in some cases. The hospital has set up screening stations, cancelling non-emergent surgeries, restricting visitors, and is taking inventory of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure we have enough for the upcoming wave of cases we may see. But the truth is, we don’t know how bad that wave is going to be, and we are all feeling quite vulnerable at the moment. Our union rep is asking us how we would feel about reusing our surgical masks all day because other hospitals are already experiencing shortages. Reusing PPE is NOT SAFE. If it comes to that we are all in trouble.

This is not a drill you guys, we really should be acting as if Coronavirus disease is already here. Social distancing is so important. Stay at home, limit grocery and other necessary trips as much as possible. Don’t have any friends over, not even one. If you are hoarding medical supplies or toilet paper, please stop. It’s super simple, some might say extreme, but it’s necessary for the time being. It won’t last forever, and we are so fortunate that with technology these days we are still able to connect with each other. We also have legal weed and Netflix!!! Which helps with the anxiety, honestly.

If you have any questions regarding COVID-19 please send us an email to [email protected], I will try my best to answer them or direct you to a proper resource. I may even compile a list of your questions for a future blog post! Quinn and I are thinking about all of you at this time, and would like to say THANK YOU for all of the online orders we have received over the last week. We will continue to process online orders and provide contact-less drop offs locally. We can also ship Canada wide.

Stay safe friends,
